A Jamaican national convicted of a serious sexual offense is expected to be released from custody this month, prompting government officials to issue a public notice and outline plans for his immediate deportation.

Sex offender Ernest Charles McQueen, 58, is scheduled for release from Westgate Correctional Facility, according to a statement from the Ministry of Justice. Authorities say that upon his release, McQueen will be taken directly into custody and held pending deportation.

The Minister of Economy and Labour and the Department of Immigration, the Honourable Jason Hayward, confirmed that arrangements are in place to ensure McQueen’s imminent removal from the island. Officials emphasized that detention during this interim period is intended to safeguard the public while the deportation process is completed.

McQueen, originally from Pembroke Parish, was previously incarcerated after being convicted of sexual exploitation of a young person while in a position of trust. His case has drawn renewed attention as his release date approaches.

The Minister of Justice, Senator Kim Wilson, stated that the decision to make a public disclosure was taken after consultation with the Bermuda Police Service. Under existing law, the Minister has the authority to release information about sex offenders who may pose a significant risk to the health and safety of the public, specific groups, or individuals.

Officials say the public statement is part of a broader commitment to transparency and community protection. McQueen, a Jamaican national, will remain in custody until his deportation is carried out, with authorities reiterating that public safety remains their primary concern.
