A 54-year-old woman appeared in Magistrates’ Court last Thursday, December 11, in connection with serious offenses of sexual assault involving a minor.

The court heard that the allegations relate to an incident said to have occurred on September 26, 2025, in Bermuda, during which the woman—described by the prosecution Adley Duncan for the Crown  as a person in a position of trust—is accused of using her hands to touch the genitalia of a child under the age of seven for sexual purposes.

The woman was not required to enter a plea to the indictable offense.

Also because of the nature of the charges and strict legal reporting restrictions, the woman cannot be identified, and no information that could lead to the identification of the child can be disclosed.

Bail was strongly contested. Crown Counsel Adley Duncan opposed the application, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations and concerns raised by the prosecution. Defense attorney Paul Wilson, however, argued that bail was appropriate at this stage. After hearing submissions from both sides, the court granted the accused woman bail in the sum of $5,000.

The matter was presided over by Magistrate Maria Sofianos, who ordered that the defendant return to court on January 5 for the Supreme Court monthly arraignment session.
